Sending out final survey information, I can't believe is has only been two weeks since we said goodbye to everyone!
We can't wait to see you all at Iowa State and make a lasting impact on future SWE U events with your feedback from your experiences. It has truly been a pleasure working, learning, and having fun with all of you! Make sure to come to the WiSE Office (218 Carver Hall) to visit us when you get to ISU! Also if you live in the area and would like to come back to check out another WiSE event...STEM Fest on Sept 16th from 1-4 pm in Howe Hall is another way to come back and say hi! See you all there! After a long and event-filled week, today was sadly our last full day. The morning helped us become more aware of the agriculture issues going on in our own backyards. Professor Helmers of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering taught us more about land and water resources.
Next the ladies finished up their innovative projects, ate a hearty lunch, and headed off to the Furman Aquatic Center. There they did a variety of activities including being lazy in the lazy river, going down water slides, cheering each other on while jumping off the diving boards, and getting a little sunburnt in the process. After returning from the aquatic center, the girls took a much deserved rest and ate dinner before then walking over to the Memorial Union. They got the chance to bowl, play pool, or make crafts in the Workspace. Their evening activities concluded with tie-dying t-shirts and completing six tie blankets for Project Linus. It is crazy to think this is the last night of SWE University 2017, but we are all looking forward to seeing family and friends tomorrow night at the Banquet. SWE you then! We started off Wednesday in Industrial Engineering with Dr. Richard Stone. He explained to us his current projects and others he had worked on in the past. One of the projects he explained was about the work he had done with hydrogels used in G-tubes. We then toured the ISU water tank and sound proof room where we were able to hear the sound of our real voices. To wrap up the tour, Dr. Stone showed us his secondary lab where his graduate and undergrad students are actively working on projects. Amongst them, different types of body armor and the advantages and various needs for each kind. After a break for lunch and work time for projects, Jim Heise presented a intro on mechanical engineering. He provided insight on all the different factions involved in mechanical engineering, along with some general history of engineering. The students were then tasked with developing an idea for a problem present in their own home -- ranging from doing the laundry, to taking out the trash, to smoke detectors. We then set out on a Cyride adventure headed for Reiman Gardens! Students loved seeing the butterflies and trying to get them to land on their fingers. They also got a chance to explore the gardens and see the ocean trash sculptures currently on display throughout the grounds. Finishing up at the gardens with a presentation from Rockwell Collins, we were informed about the company and future opportunities at the company i.e. internships and co-ops. It was great to see the students ask questions pertaining to their futures! Closing up the evening, we ended the night at the Memorial Union, bowling and crafting at the Workspace. A good night's sleep is near for these future engineers.
Tuesday was another day filled with lots of activities and learning. We began the day, by learning about Aerospace Engineering from a multitude of professors from the department. After learning the basic principles of Aerospace Engineering, we got the opportunity to see the flight simulator lab. Next, we went upstairs to check out the Iowa State tornado simulator(see video attached below) along with a quick tour of the wind tunnels. After the wind tunnels we went back to working on our cardboard houses in the MINE. In the afternoon we had a session where we learned about chemical engineering with Dr. Nigel Reuel. We made paint using different amounts of baby powder, flour and water. We used varying amounts to determine which one would cover the best while still being a paint-like consistency. Then, we went back to the MINE and started working on our projects for the week (you will all have to wait until Friday to see the projects)! We finished the evening by going to state gym. Students had the option to go rock climbing, play basketball or play board games and color. We were also joined by the awesome Beth Hartmann from our CE and ConE session Monday, who showed us all up on the rock wall. After a long, full day, everyone was exhausted and went to bed shortly after arriving back to the dorms.
Monday was filled with lots of engaging and hands-on learning at SWE University. The day started out with the Civil/Construction Engineering session where the girls analyzed building plans and created their own scaled down version of cardboard houses.
In the afternoon, we got to experience the renowned Professor Larry Genalo who wowed the girls with his Material Engineering experiments. It included frozen marshmallows, shattering a pane of tempered glass, and exploding racket balls against the wall. You can see the whole racket ball experiment below or fast forward to 2:10 for the climatic explosion. We then worked with Professor Steve Martin to test the insulating properties of varying windows. Lastly, we briefly observed how a Scanning Electron Microscope operated. After a hearty supper and a period of downtime, the campers participated in a scavenger hunt finding clues around campus. The excitement of the day's riveting sessions and events tired the girls out, so a good night of rest was much deserved. Hi everyone! We had a very fun-filled night on Sunday. After getting to know each other with ice breakers, we had dinner at the Union Drive Marketplace. We then went over to Howe Hall for an intro to engineering session with Dr. Raman. We discussed that different aspects of engineering and all the different types of jobs. It was very entertaining and included two competitions: a bridge contest and a lego house building race! The bridge building competition was a lot of fun! The girls tried to make the longest bridge they could with only a sheet of paper and a sticker. In the next competition, the girls raced to build toy houses out of legos! They aimed to make the houses as fast as they could but also within certain criteria for building. At the end of the night, we went back to Martin Hall and watched the movie "Smart House". Overall, it was a great night and we're all excited for Monday!
We are all so excited to welcome you all to Iowa State University today! We are all moved into Martin, Boyd and ready to start the week!
See you all soon! We are in full swing, here in the WiSE office, prepping for the first day of camp July 9th! Thanks to the College of Engineering for donating a lot of cool items for our registration bags. Can't wait to get them put together for everyone! Working on final confirmations and smaller details that are going to make this camp something special. We can't wait to have our SWE U participants here to enjoy all the hard work our committee has put in through out the last year.
Thanks All, we are looking forward to meeting everyone, GET EXCITED!!! ONLY 12 MORE DAYS!!! WELCOME to the SWE University blog site, a place to come and view a daily blog of photos and information your student is experiencing throughout the week!
Check out the different pages we have on the website, some that talk more about our program, and the history of SWE University, others will help you get acquainted with our Staff for this Summer 2017 camp. See photos and our daily blog post to get next day updates of some of the fun things your student is experiencing at Iowa State University!
